Beethoven Piano Concerto No. 6 in D, K537
After six concerts exploring Mozart’s piano concertos, for the last concert in the London Mozart Players lunchtime concert series at St John’s Smith Square this season, the orchestra and their conductor laureate Howard Shelley explore the revised version of Beethoven’s Violin Concerto, reworked for piano and orchestra by the composer himself on the suggestion of Muzio Clementi.
Not just a revised score, the piano version features Beethoven’s own cadenza which unusually features a prominent timpani part, while the orchestral parts remain the same as the original solo violin scoring. With short illustrated introductions to the concerto from Howard Shelley as well as a full performance of the work, this concert will offer listeners a unique and personal insight into understanding the characteristics of Beethoven’s compositional style.
