Education Facilitator

Are you a passionate advocate for widening participation in music and arts education? Do you love working with children and young people, and supporting them to explore their artistic capabilities?

Building on our 30-year history of delivering education and outreach work across Croydon and the South East, London Mozart Players Orchestra (LMP) is seeking highly experienced music educators to support us in the next phase of our education programme’s development. This is a freelance, peripatetic role, giving our facilitators the opportunity to work on a range of projects.

LMP has been delivering education work since our move to Croydon in 1989. In that time, our work has impacted tens of thousands of children and young people, inspiring the next generation of musicians, composers and artists.

Over the next few years, we plan to expand on this work with a renewed focus on how we measure impact, whilst continuing to deliver high quality music education experiences to a range of children and young people. To do this, we’re building a team of expert Education Facilitators who can bring their specialist knowledge to our already well-established programmes of work.

Some things we’re proud of:

In 1989, we became the the first orchestra in the UK to have a female Artistic Director (Jane Glover)
In 2017, we won the Cultural Impact Award at the Croydon Business Excellence Awards.
In 2018, we commissioned a special Anthem for Peace following the riots in Croydon, involving hundreds of artists and performers from across the borough.
During the COVID-19 pandemic, we were the first orchestra to produce free-to-view online content for audiences through our At Home with LMP series. We were also the first to perform in a public space when the first lockdown was lifted, and filmed an audience-free concert at Westfield Shopping Centre.
Earlier this year, we hosted the launch event for Croydon’s year as the London Borough of Culture, for which we received a five-star review in The Times.

Who we are

Don’t let our name mislead you – we don’t just play in London, and we certainly don’t just play Mozart! As well as our residencies in Croydon and the South East, we’re well known internationally for working with many of the world’s greatest conductors and soloists. We’re proud to have developed a reputation for making and playing adventurous, ambitious and accessible music, and for being at the forefront of embedding arts and culture into the life of local communities across the UK and beyond.

After celebrating our 70^th birthday in 2019, we soon found ourselves navigating orchestra life during the pandemic in 2020. During that time, we remained active and busy, creating an award-winning digital concert series which reached millions of people – reaffirming our commitment to our audiences even in times of challenge, finding new ways to exercise our creativity.

Now, we’re excited to be working back in person, creating lots of new concerts and programmes to surprise and delight our audiences.

Where you fit in

To help us bring our education programme visions to life, we need experienced and visionary Education Facilitators who can help us create exciting and impactful education experiences for the children and young people we work with. Education Facilitators will report to our Artistic Projects Manager Sophie Haynes, and support our wider Development Team by providing the data and insights needed to create a robust evaluation framework.

Who we’re looking for

To be successful in this role, you’ll need to be someone who already has a track record of delivering music education work, and a knack for building rapport with groups of children and young people fairly quickly. Your passion for supporting children and young people and warm delivery will be matched by your expertise on the latest methods in music pedagogy, co-creation and participation.

You’re great at thinking on your feet, can adapt to unexpected challenges and have a generally calm approach
You enjoy having lots of variety in your work

You’ll definitely need:

The ability to read music, and / or play an instrument
Significant experience of teaching / training / facilitation, and working with children and young people
Great relationship-building and communication skills as well as emotional intelligence and sensitivity
A flair for creating and delivering engaging workshops and learning opportunities
A good knowledge of classical music and orchestral repertoire
The ability to read music
An enthusiasm for the work of the London Mozart Players, arts, music and culture
The ability to manage client relationships in a professional manner
To be very organised, with a meticulous attention to detail
A cool head, with the ability to work well under pressure
To be highly proactive, good at anticipating needs and finding solutions to unexpected problems
Up-to-date IT skills and confidence learning new software
Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal 
The ability to work as part of a small, close-knit team

It would also be a bonus (but not essential) if you have:

Previously worked for an orchestra in a similar role
You have specific expertise in early years, SEN or care work
A full UK driving licence (and use of a car)
A personal connection to Croydon, Hastings or Sussex
